Question – Can I do Swimming and Weight training on alternate days.
For overall fitness combining an aerobic activity with an anaerobic activity is a brilliant combination .
For example swimming is an aerobic activity which is good for enhancing your cardio vascular endurance that means stronger heart, increased lung capacity and better stamina. On the other hand weight training is an anaerobic activity and is extremely effective for gaining strength and enhancing bone density that means reducing your chances of osteoporosis and arthritis.
So if your goals is to stay fit then combing an aerobic activity with an anaerobic activity is a terrific combination. Although if your goal is specific then you need to tweak these combinations a little. For example if your goal is gain strength then you need to reduce your cardio training by 90 % and focus more on power lifts, if its only fat loss and weight loss then you need to give equal weightage to both strength and cardio vascular training and if it’s to gain muscle and lose body fat simultaneously then then you need to focus more on strength training and little less on cardio vascular training (I would say 70 % weight training and 30 % cardio)
Personally i do strength training on alternate days and cardio vascular training like squash, running and football on other days to enhance both aerobic capacity and anaerobic capacity.
